Responsible Wood Sourcing Policy

Since 2004 abc carpet & home has been a leader in guiding the furniture industry through our goodwood™ program. This process protects old growth and endangered forest species, while promoting transparent supply chain management through a commitment to responsibly managed forests and reclaimed sources. We are working closely with our suppliers toward continual improvement eliminating unacceptable sources while progressively increasing the amount of responsible wood – wood from certified and reclaimed/recycled sources.

abc carpet & home recognizes the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) as an important tool to promote forest management. We have a preference for sourcing FSC-certified wood furniture when it meets our requirements. We also accept wood from other forest certification systems, such as the Programme for the Endorsement of Certification (PEFC) and PEFC-endorsed national schemes like the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI).

abc carpet & home is also firmly committed to avoiding wood from unacceptable sources, including:

• Illegally harvested or traded timber;
• Timber harvested in violation of traditional or civil rights;
• Timber harvested from areas in which high conservation values are threatened by poor forest management;
• Timber harvested from areas being converted from forests to plantations or non-forest use;
• Timber from forests in which genetically modified trees are planted.

Through this policy, abc carpet & home furthers our commitment to stewarding the industry towards protection of the world’s forest and to creating positive change for the planet and its people.

Policy Implementation & Progress Reporting

abc carpet & home has a goal of sourcing 93% of its wood furniture responsibly by the year 2020 and of increasing the percentage of preferred products over time. We classify responsible sources as follows, in descending order of preference:

• FSC certified
• PEFC certified (including SFI)
• Reclaimed/recycled
• Low risk wood for legality (as defined by FSC’s Global Forest Registry)

We track our progress toward this goal by reporting our results annually.
